The Tilta Mirage clamps onto the lens rather than riding on rods, and this 82mm adapter ring is what gives it something to clamp to. It screws into the filter thread on the front of an 82mm lens, then the Mirage closes around the ring and locks with its thumbscrew. Nothing touches the camera body and there is no lens donut to fight with.
The front face carries its own 82mm female thread, so a screw-on filter — a variable ND, a CPL, a black mist — can stay on the lens while the matte box is mounted. That matters when you have already built a look around a circular filter and want the Mirage on top of it for flare control and 4 x 5.65″ trays.
The body is machined from aluminium alloy, stiff enough to carry the matte box without sag and light enough to keep the front of the rig balanced on a gimbal or a shoulder build. The black anodised finish and the close fit against the lens barrel stop light creeping in from behind.
Rings are specific to one thread size, so most Mirage owners end up with two or three. Keep one for each lens diameter you shoot on and moving the matte box between lenses takes seconds.
