A cage turns a camera into a platform. Bare, the body gives you one cold shoe and a tripod thread; caged, it is covered in 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threads, NATO rails and ARRI locating pins, so every accessory has somewhere to go.
Cages are cut for one specific body — the ports and the grip move between generations, so a cage for the previous model will not sit right. Check the camera name before ordering.
Anti-twist threads and locating pins are what keep a monitor level all day instead of slowly rotating out of position.
