Light beams are invisible until there is something in the air for them to hit. A little haze is what makes a shaft of light through a window read on camera, and what gives a concert or a music video its depth.
Used sparingly, fog separates a subject from the background and adds atmosphere no amount of grading will fake. Used heavily, it becomes the effect itself.
Ventilate between takes and build the haze up gradually — it is far easier to add more than to clear a room.
